How your coach uses your equipment list
What information from your bike, swim, and run equipment actually feeds coaching decisions.
What the list is for
The equipment inventory on /my-equipment/ is not just a
record of what you own. It feeds three specific coaching
decisions, and missing or wrong entries can produce wrong
race plans.
What gets used and how
Bike
The fields on your BikeSetup feed:
- Total weight (kg): input to the
Bike Power Plan
calculator. Wrong weight = wrong bike split projection.
- Last CdA (m squared): the aero coefficient used in the
same calculator. Missing CdA means the bike plan falls
back to defaults.
- Last Crr: rolling resistance, same calculator.
- Crank length, saddle height, saddle setback, stack,
reach, pad width, pad stack: fit measurements. If your
position drifts, comparing past and present values
diagnoses what changed.
- Tire pressure (front and rear): what you ran on the
most recent race or test, used to compute Crr against
course and tire combinations.
- Frame, wheels, tires, groupset, pedals, saddle,
helmet: identification for race-day setup checks and
for diagnosing equipment-related power or comfort issues.
- Primary flag: which bike is the race bike. The
wizard pulls from this one by default.
Swim
Your SwimEquipment records feed:
- Wetsuit / trisuit / swimskin choice: the coach picks
the right one per race based on wetsuit legality and
conditions. Without a record, they cannot.
- Goggles model: useful for race-day spare planning.
Run
Your RunEquipment records feed:
- Race shoes vs training shoes: the coach knows which
shoes you race in (which matters for shoe-mileage
planning).
- Insoles: confirms what is in the shoe.
Why it matters even if you mostly train at home
- If you race at all, the bike weight and CdA matter for any
goal-time projection.
- Switching bikes mid-season changes everything; a recorded
switch lets the coach explain a power or pace shift.
- Equipment problems often masquerade as fitness problems
(saddle creep, dropping crank length, new shoe). The
inventory + change log gives the coach a starting place
to look.
What the coach does NOT do with your list
- Auto-buy or recommend specific brands.
- Track wear and mileage automatically (you log shoe
mileage in notes if you want it tracked).
- Make wetsuit decisions automatically based on race water
temperature (that is a manual coach call).
What to keep up to date
- After any equipment change, update the record. New
saddle? New wheels? New shoes? Update the row plus a
short note ("upgraded saddle, comfort improved").
- After a fit session, update the seven fit
measurements (see
Logging fit measurements).
- After a CdA test, update
last_cda (or it updates
automatically if you ran the test from the wizard).
- Annually, audit the list and retire anything you no
longer use.
